Sterilizing in the microwave? Empty Sterilizing in the microwave?

I just ordered my first cup. I live with my boyfriend and his family (mom, uncle, brother, sister in law) and there is ALWAYS somebody home and walking through the kitchen. I was wondering, for the sake of privacy, can cups be sterilized by boiling in the microwave? Obviously I would put them in a microwave safe container with plenty of water.

Does anyone do this? Or know of any potential hazards?
